‘Visibility is not vanity’, Other Moments at Conversation for Change
Community members gathered last week at the Holland Performing Arts Center for the 4th Annual Jane H. & Rabbi Sidney H. Brooks Conversations for Change, hosted by Inclusive Communities. What unfolded over the course of an hour was a shared moment of reflection, affirmation, and collective inspiration.
Featuring 3x Emmy Award–winning journalist, author, and entrepreneur Gaby Natale, this year’s event invited attendees to reconsider how they see themselves, their stories, and their place in the world.
Natale’s message centered on what it means to live with a pioneering spirit, “trusting your vision even before there is proof, and choosing who you are rather than accepting who others assume you to be.” She challenged the audience to quiet external noise and instead listen closely to their inner voice, reminding us that even the smallest beginnings can carry powerful, transformative ideas.
Throughout the room, her words resonated deeply.
Attendees reflected on the importance of defining themselves on their own terms, rather than through stereotypes or assumptions placed on them by others. Many walked away with a renewed sense of clarity around what drives meaningful success, anchored in excellence, consistency, and visibility.
One idea, in particular, stayed with many long after the event ended: “Visibility is not vanity.”
For some, this was more than a quote; it was a shift in perspective. It reframed visibility not as self-promotion, but as purpose. As one attendee shared, it was a reminder that showing up fully and authentically is not about seeking attention, but about creating impact and opening doors for others.
Others reflected on how Natale’s story of resilience, identity, and courage offered a powerful sense of connection. Her authenticity as a Latina leader and creator of SuperLatina and The Virtuous Circle reinforced a message that what makes us different is often our greatest strength.
There was also a shared recognition that life’s most difficult moments, the ones we would never choose, often become the very experiences that shape us the most. Natale’s words encouraged attendees to “see those moments not just as challenges, but as opportunities for growth, purpose, and transformation.”
At its core, the event embodied what Conversations for Change is meant to be: a space for courage, legacy, and belonging.
Under the leadership of Executive Director Cammy Watkins, Mandy True, and the Inclusive Communities volunteers, the gathering created room for honest reflection and meaningful dialogue. It reminded everyone in attendance that when one person steps forward, it permits others to do the same.
As attendees left the theater, many carried with them a renewed commitment: “to show up, to take up space, and to lead with intention.”
Because visibility, as we were reminded, is not about being seen, it’s about making a difference.
