Omaha Table Talk | ERA 2020: Reframing Womxn’s Equality as Equity

“Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.”

– Equal Rights Amendment

The Equal Rights Amendment was introduced in 1923 by Alice Paul.  On March 29, 1972, Nebraska voted to ratify the amendment which, in addition to 38 other states, would have incorporated this amendment into the Constitution, thereby making it illegal to draw distinctions between the sexes.  Discourse around the equality of people who identify as womxn is centered on what equality to men would look like, but womxn have a different experience.  Using the ERA as a foundation for a conversation on true equity, what does a society that truly empowers womxn with the tools and policies they need to live fully in their potential look like? What are the legal, political and financial structures that we need to achieve equity for womxn of all identities?
